We Treat These Dental Emergencies

If you're experiencing any of these conditions, don't wait — call us immediately for same-day treatment.

Severe Pain

Toothache & Tooth Pain

Persistent or throbbing tooth pain can indicate decay, infection, or an abscess. Over-the-counter pain relievers may provide temporary relief, but the underlying cause requires professional treatment. We'll diagnose the source of your pain and provide effective relief.

Symptoms
Throbbing pain Sensitivity to hot/cold Pain when chewing Swelling
Urgent Care Needed

Broken or Chipped Tooth

A cracked, chipped, or fractured tooth can expose sensitive inner layers and lead to infection. Rinse with warm water, save any broken pieces, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. We can restore your tooth with bonding, a crown, or other restorative treatment.

Symptoms
Visible crack or chip Sharp edge on tooth Pain when biting Temperature sensitivity
Act Fast — Time Critical

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out permanent tooth is a true dental emergency. Handle the tooth by the crown only — never touch the root. Gently rinse it, and if possible, place it back in the socket. If not, keep it moist in milk or saline. The sooner you reach us, the better the chance of saving the tooth.

Immediate Steps
Handle by crown only Keep tooth moist See dentist within 1 hour
Discomfort

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown exposes the underlying tooth structure, which can be sensitive and prone to further damage. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth until you see us. We'll replace the filling or recement the crown promptly to prevent complications.

Symptoms
Exposed tooth Temperature sensitivity Discomfort when eating
Potential Infection

Abscess & Gum Infection

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection. It can cause severe pain, facial swelling, fever, and can spread to other parts of your body if left untreated. We'll drain the abscess, prescribe antibiotics, and treat the underlying cause to eliminate the infection.

Symptoms
Facial swelling Pimple on gum Fever Bad taste in mouth
Needs Evaluation

Soft Tissue Injury

Cuts, lacerations, or trauma to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums from accidents or sports injuries need prompt attention. Rinse with warm water, apply pressure with gauze to control bleeding, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. We'll assess and treat the injury.

Symptoms
Bleeding Laceration Swelling Pain

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Stay calm and follow these steps. Your quick action can make all the difference in preserving your teeth and relieving pain.

1

Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

Take a deep breath. Determine the severity of your situation. Is there bleeding, severe pain, swelling, or a visible injury to your tooth or mouth? If you're bleeding heavily or having difficulty breathing, go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

2

Call Waikiki Dental Right Away

Call (916) 772-6248 as soon as possible. Explain your symptoms clearly so we can prepare for your arrival. We reserve time in our schedule for emergencies and will do everything we can to see you the same day. The earlier you call, the sooner we can help.

3

Provide First Aid While You Wait

If you're bleeding, apply gentle pressure with clean gauze or a cloth. For swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek in 15-minute intervals. Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water to clean the area. If you have a knocked-out tooth, keep it moist in milk.

4

Manage Pain Responsibly

Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. Do not place aspirin directly on your tooth or gums — this can burn the soft tissue. Avoid extremely hot, cold, or sugary foods that may aggravate the pain.

5

Come In for Professional Treatment

Bring any saved tooth fragments or dental appliances with you. Our team will take digital X-rays, assess the damage, discuss your treatment options, and get you out of pain as quickly as possible. We'll explain everything clearly so you know what to expect.

6

Follow Post-Treatment Instructions

After your emergency treatment, follow any care instructions provided by Dr. Narodovich. This may include taking prescribed medications, avoiding certain foods, or scheduling a follow-up appointment. Proper aftercare ensures the best possible outcome and prevents complications.

A dental emergency includes severe tooth pain that doesn't subside, a tooth that has been knocked out or loosened, a cracked or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown causing discomfort, a dental abscess with swelling or fever, uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth, and trauma to the jaw or facial area. If you're unsure whether your condition is an emergency, call us at (916) 772-6248 and we'll advise you.
If a permanent tooth is knocked out, handle it by the crown only — never touch the root. Gently rinse it with water without scrubbing. If possible, try to place the tooth back into its socket. If that's not possible, store it in milk or a saline solution. Time is critical — see a dentist within 30 minutes to an hour for the best chance of saving the tooth. Call us immediately at (916) 772-6248.

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to clean the area. Gently floss to remove any trapped food. You may take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gums as it can burn tissue). Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling. Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods that may aggravate the tooth. Then call us at (916) 772-6248 to schedule an emergency appointment.
